Overview
Emsam is a prescription drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat major depressive disorder in people 12 years and older. Emsam is also known by its drug name, Selegiline.

Emsam is an antidepressant of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) class. Emsam is believed to work by changing the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain.

How do I take it?
Emsam is applied to the skin once daily.

Emsam comes in the form of a transdermal patch.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Emsam lists common side effects including headache, insomnia, dry mouth, upset stomach, rash, cold symptoms, and application site reactions.

Rare but serious side effects listed for Emsam include mania, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and increased blood pressure.
