Has Anyone Just Been Told They Are Depressed And Anxious And Given Meds?

A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭
Mill Creek, WV

I told my doctor (not a psychiatrist or counselor) how I was feeling and I was prescribed celexa. Has anyone been in this same boat. I thought the dr would refer me to a psychiatrist or mental health professional for them to diagnose this (?) What would everyone recommend?

I know I'm really young but I hope my advice will still be acknowledged. The same thing happened to me and my doctor did not send me to a psych or anything. I sought one out on my own accord because I didn't feel that medication would be enough. I needed tools to help myself through rough days. Even if your doctor doesn't send you the way of a psych doctor you can still go and try to find what works for you.

The same happened to me. After a few years on meds I decided to see a psych doc and found out I have bipolar, PTSD and a boarder line eating disorder. My meds were adjusted and I received therapy and I became more stable. I think it's best to go to a specialist to get the best care.

Yes thats what happens to me. We really need to look after ourselves I think and get good counselling and help and do whats the best for ourselves. I think drs are there to deal with medical things whereas counsellors etc are there for our brains.

I agree with you Kathy, counselling helps as well. Medication on its own isnt enough I feel either.
