Does Anyone Have Trouble Making A Commitment?
For example keeping Drs. appointments, dates with friends or family, hair cuts etc.
I certainly do. Before I started mental health and counselling appointments I made sure to tell them this too! It helped me stay connected with my support network and helped them tailor their support to my needs. If your struggling to make commitments it may help you to think about what the worst thing that could happen would be. My counsellor advised this to me and it really helped. For example, if you do go to the hairdressers, what's the worst that can happen? These problems can be overcome by problem solving and practice! I've missed appointments since I started counselling, but the main point is that you try and try again.
I have severe problems committing to anything like appts, even lunch dates with friends. I never know what I will feel like physically or emotionally each day. I try to keep appts but have rescheduled the same one as many as four times. Often it's because I can't stand the idea of going out around others. I don't know. When I do force myself to go I enjoy my time but always always want to be back home.
I cancel plans all the time. Especially if it involves anything that I have anxiety about and it is easy to reschedule, I will put it off or cancel entirely. For example, I think I'm supposed to have lunch with a friend today. Don't want to because I don't want to answer any questions about anything right now. But I should probably go and just listen to her talk about her life.
Dedicating yourself to something or someone can be difficult at times, especially if you feel obligated. Just remember, don't bite off more than you can chew, and don't over commit.
I cant plan in advance very well. If I want to go to the cinema it's usually spontaneous. For pre scheduled appointments I usually have a friend drive me to make sure I attend.
