Getting Your Sleeping Routine Back To Normal When You Feel Depressed

A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭
Glasgow, UK

I've started new meds and also as I'm not working at the moment I am becoming more and more nocturnal and am often not going to bed until 5am. I feel tired all the time and I can't wake up before midday or 1pm. I've tried setting really loud alarms for myself but nothing is working to get me up earlier. Half the problem is I'm so depressed and having money worries that I don't want to get up as then I have to think about my worries and how awful my life is just now. When I sleep I can escape it… read more

I make tiny goals for myself instead of thinking about everything all at once. I tell myself to sit up. Stand up. Get dressed. Start the car, etc. Baby steps are less overwhelming. I hope this helps.

Sleep is the escape for a mind that is in overload. Stay away from your bed during the day, lie down in the couch if u r tired. Get enuf exercise n make sure you stick to a routine. Try do little things. Make goals for the day, small ones. Congratulate yourself wen u accomplish them. If u don't manage don't beat yourself up, try again tomorrow. Baby steps will get u there n sheer determination, it's sometimes not so much about the meds but more about our will to fight for it. Good luck

Bedtime routines help. Getting up at the same time in the morning.

Angie, I take a sleeping pill, Ambien, because with my CPAP machine, it would blow air into my face all night and I couldn't sleep, maybe you could get a sleeping pill from your doctor, it's so important to get enough sleep. You need to go to bed at a decent hour and wake up at a decent hour. I know the money worries are keeping you from getting out of bed, but they aren't going away, and if you work on them, maybe getting payment plans, etc., just work on them, eat a good breakfast so your mind is clear. That will be a good thing to do for yourself, get tackling those problems, otherwise your depression and lack of sleep about them will drive you crazy, that vicious cycle of coulda, woulda, shoulda... Please don't do that to yourself! Thinking about you, I hope you can come up with a solution! Hugs

I agree, LauraCherrey! My bedtime and wake up time were all messed up because I did not have a regular routine. Now, I go to bed at approximately the same time every night and wake up around the same time as I used to. The routine does help even though I'd like to keep on staying up late and reading til midnight! :)
