Guilt
How do you cope with guilt /guilty feelings?
Guilt can be a powerful factor in our lives, and one that is needlessly exacerbated by certain moral theologies. We may be conditioned from a young age to carry guilt because of our shortcomings in a religious connotation. A church that harangues its members with ideas of God's wrath, for instance, is using fear as motivation for obedience. Every time a member falls short they are supposed to feel tremendously guilty, thus changing their behaviour and staying within the organizations tight-fisted domain. Parents can unwittingly reinforce this in the home. Within this context, my own feelings are that guilt is the single biggest roadblock to any sort of spiritual growth and maturity. Love and guilt cannot co-exist.
Outside of the religious equation the same principles can apply. Guilt arises, in my opinion, because we have fallen short of some personal expectation, or that of someone else. There can be some good in this because we are thus encouraged to adapt what may be harmful behaviour to that more in line with a caring and compassionate existence. But guilt can become a habit and will seep into more meaningless areas of our life. How to cope with it? By accepting who and what we are. Accept our flaws and the mistakes we've made. If people refuse to forgive us, we must learn to leave that behind and move on. It's not always easy, but it begins with forgiving ourselves. There are many fine books and articles available to help with this. Blessings to you. :)
