How does a person prevent themselves from having a mental breakdown and shutting off from people and falling into deep depression?

By getting help when you need it and by getting your medication adjusted so that it works properly.

I, too, would like to hear some more answers to your questions @A MyDepressionTeam Member. As I suffer from doing the things you mentioned too often and it hurts so bad to realize that I just had another breakdown. And I just slipped further into this endless abyss of desperation and despair.

I know when I take too much I wake up with a mouth so dry that Ii struggle to take a breath.
As well my heart beats like hell
