If A Mother Acts Toxic, Do I Have A Right To My Self-respect?

A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I know she's my mother, but sometimes I can't handle myself around her; I lose myself. She violates boundaries and my mental health declines.

Yes indeed you do Darcy, you have a right to self respect, to self confidence and being the person you want to be. I had a tough time being confident around my mother because she kept putting me down and was left feeling like I couldn't do anything right. No matter what I did there would be instructions coming from the living room but I did manage to stand up to her from time to time. Sadly since she passed away I have found myself becoming more confident and happier in myself.

My mom was the same way. You have to develop a good distance from her, especially if she effects your mental health.

You most definitely have the right to your self respect. You also have the right to not allow her to cross your boundaries. I know its easier said than done. Believe in yourself and stay strong.

Do what's best for you.
Tough Love.
Walk away from toxic people.
Pray for them,but set boundaries.
Don't let them steal your peace of mind.

The best description I ever heard of eating disorders was "the good child's addiction."
