Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Has anyone experienced memory issues after ect treatments? I have heard stories of ect erasing memories of patients and messing with their short term memory as well.

I have just finished 13 sessions of ECT and the results are great. I do have a little memory loss or more like slow recall. Once somebody triggers a blank memory I can usually recall with prompts and reminders from them. This is getting better each day and the result on my depression is amazing.

I have had at least 13 ect treatments. Yes, it has affected my memory to a degree. However, when someone gives me a prompt, then the memory comes back. I do not regret having the ECT treatments. I just wish I could continue them.

I had 13 ECTs . I had short memory loss but everything came back. I felt it was a small price to pay to get back my sanity.

Yes, very true. Depression symptoms became life threatening for me. For my situation I had ECT treatments for 10 years. Short term and long term memory was definitely impacted. ECT doctor spoke with me about this possibility and placed electrodes to hopefully lessen the impact on memory. The memory loss has been inconvenient and sometimes embarrassing but I am grateful to be alive.
