Psychiatrist
I have been out of psychiatric hospital for 6 weeks. I dont have a psychiatrist that I see, I have a care co-ordinator. I dont understand why I dont see a psychiatrist?? Do you have to have particular mental health conditions to have a paychiatrist??
Do you see a psychologist or therapist?
I've been told that psychiatrists and psychologists are basically the same, only difference is that a psychiatrist has had more training to handle prescribing and managing medications. Another difference is how they interact with patients.
So basically it depends on your needs. Whether you need more clinical help with medications and such or more therapeutic help, basically someone to listen to you and offer suggestions.
.. if the system is similar to here in Southern Ontario ( Canada ). Psychiatrists are over worked. It takes for ever to get an appointment - to oversee mediations / dosages. You get in to see them ... they look down at their notes for 95% of the time you are talking to them. Then they tell you what they think .. say let me ( or my nurse practitioner ) how it's going. Hopefully everything is good .. - Take care of yourself ...... So it may be preferable to see someone who is aware of your mental health diagnosis, and your present history ... and has more time to spend with you.
Especially if youβre on medication you should see a psychiatrist. Talk to your care coordinator about finding one.
