Do Any Medication Really Work For Severe Depression?

A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Does anyone take Wellbutrin xl 150mg or 300mg for depression?

What kind of good benefits or bad side effects are there?

At some point, I have taken just about every antidepressant under the sun. Wellbutrin and Celexa together did a fantastic job for four years. When that pooped out, I finally got on my present Wellbutrin (300 mg.), Effexor and Remeron combo. The benefits are great - no more depression or anxiety, no social phobia, more enthusiasm for life. Fortunately, I never get side effects from antidepressants, but I know a lot of people do.

I have Major Depressive Disorder with PTSD and severe anxiety. I take Cymbalta, Ativan, ( for the anxiety,) Abilify and Trazodone. This combination seems to keep me stable and I seem to have more good days than bad.

Hi Glenn, I used to take Wellbutrin but it completely did not work for me, it made me very anxious and I gained a lot of weight. Of course for my husband it made him quit smoking and helped with his depression a lot, but he also did gain a lot of weight.

Each person’s body will react differently. I know a lot of people who use Wellbutrin with another medication- usually ability.

Neither of those worked too well for me. I used to be on Paxil which worked great, but it made me gain a ton of weight. I was then put on Viibryd but that stopped working and affected my sleep.

Now I am on Prozac which works well for me, xanax, as well as another medication to help me sleep at night (it’s a blood pressure medication that helps people with ptsd not have night tremors or vivid nightmares.

Medications are tricky and I have found from my experience it’s a game of trial and error until you find the right mix. So far no weight gain, works well, but I get very dry mouth, very tired, and diarrhea:(. However for me, those side effects are worth the sacrifice of being healthy mentally.

I hope the med regimen works for for you...Wellbutrin seems to work for most men I know. Being someone who had severe nerves- it didn’t work for me because it made me edgier and more anxious. Plus- I had been placed on klonopin when I was on Wellbutrin to calm the nerves - but I got addicted :(
