Getting A Job While Fighting Depression

A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hello everyone! I just got through the worst of a severe depressive episode, but I still deal with moderate symptoms. My issue is being employed always increased my self-esteem (which is zero right now) but I fear going back to work due to low self-confidence. I quit a job 1 1/2 years ago and want to return but I'm afraid I'll relapse and have to quit. On the other hand a job would possibly improve my self-esteem and my depression. I am a nurse. No, I'm not the teacher type - more of assisted living for the elderly who are still mobile and appreciative of what you do for them. Thanx for your response however.

Oooo, you could get work instantly with those skills, and can be selective of employers, I would think.

So, do you have a good support system in place, Jules?

My job that I trained for and loved burned me out after 13 years in the field. Fried. Crispy. Extra crispy. I took a job in a bookstore for a year, and began teaching part- time at a local community college. Totally refreshing!! A year after that I was made an offer by a university for a full- time position, and snatched it up! 30 years later I retired, content.

All this to say, have you thought about teaching, Jules? It keeps you on the cutting edge without immersing you in the constant trauma. ❤️‍🩹
