Do You Disclose Your Diagnosis To An Employer Or Keep It To Yourself?
I'm looking for a part time job because I want to get off disability and go back to work full time. I need to work part time for 6 months to renew my professional licenses because I've been on disability for years. How do I know whether to disclose my bipolar diagnosis to an employer in an interview. I have always told the truth. But maybe I should lie about why I have to work part time
I definitely would not lie about it and neither would I share my personal health challenges which legally is not allowed to be required of you on any interviews or job applications. You have a right to try to work without explaining all your choices and circumstances.
I don't think you should mention your illness unless it starts affecting your work. If it becomes a larger issue than talk to your boss about what you have and are doing to deal with it.
From experience, I would not disclose it during an interview. However once employed you should disclose it at some point. I have lost two jobs due to my anxiety / depression. You protect yourself if your bi-polar will effect your work performance. You just need to find the correct opportunity to do so.
Ok I got hired and have a good start with my employer so I still haven't told her my diagnosis. At this point I think I'll keep it to myself. That's the best solution in my opinion
Rachel--I am glad you're telling us a little more of your certificates, etc. I know you will get the right place at the right time!! We all learn, the more we care.
