Psychiatrist Ignoring Suicidal Thoughts

A MyDepressionTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi the other day I started feeling suicidal and I had recently had my dose increased. I called my new psychiatrist and she wouldn't return my call or talk about changing my medication or dose at all. I have never encountered such an attitude and she refuses to change either my dose or medication. It's not like I call up every week attention seeking or being a drama queen, I genuinely felt like I couldn't go on. I feel like this is almost clinical negligence, could you give me your opinion, I'd… read more

OMG this is so wrong and unethical on the part of your psychiatrist. Anyone feeling suicidal or expressing suicidal ideation has to be taken seriously and taken to an emergency room or other medical facility for evaluation. Your life may be at stake. Please know that there are people out there who care about you. Please find another physician ASAP!

This happens time and time again. It shouldn’t but it does. Change your physician. Never feel you can’t ring someone for help and or advice. It’s hard trying to sort out medication when it’s new and your still playing around trying to get the right dosage rate. I struggle as I’m out in the middle of nowhere. I would be up s/:t creek if I couldn’t talk to the emergency team. Be strong and change who you are with❤️

Yes, JohnGeraghty has it right, when you call after hours, they tell you that if it's an emergency to call 911 or go to your nearest ER. I would change doctors, and let the office know how you feel, that you really were on the way to doing yourself in, there should be some way, call your insurance company and tell them, you might very well get a referral to another doctor more quickly this way.
